• Planning and Design
  Dome and roll-off roof observatories each have benefits and drawbacks and deciding on which style is best for your home observatory can sometimes be the hardest part. And once the style is chosen, there are decisions to be made on observatory options, equipment, automation and many other areas. And choices you make in one area can affect how the observatory operates in another.
  
  
  
  Because of our experience in building observatories, Durango Skies can guide you through the options and point out the benefits, and potential pit falls, to different choices. And we can suggest designs you might not have thought of. The best part is that we have the tools to help you visual your finished home observatory before it is built.
  
  
• Construction
  Once the planning and design are complete, there is no need to go searching for a contractor to make your home observatory a reality. Durango Skies has a crew of professional builders that understand the nuances of observatory construction and follow standard building practices -- the same practices as those used to build a residential home. We realize that you have a lot invested in your equipment and we aim to protect that investment with quality construction designed to last. And if your project requires a building permit, our construction standards will comply with local building codes.
  
  
• Equipment
  An Observatory would not be much use without the proper equipment. There are many choices in the marketplace today and we work with you to determine the setup that is right for your needs. All the manufacturers we recommend have a long history of providing quality products and are a leader in their equipment category. And because we are an authorized dealer for these manufacturers, we can order the equipment for you, insure that you have all the proper adapters and attachments, coordinate delivery with the completion of your observatory and get everything setup and operating.

Our History

In 2005 our retail store, Durango Skies Telescope and Binocular, was launched in Durango, Colorado. Why Durango, Colorado? Because, nestled in the San Juan Mountains at 6,512 feet, it is blessed with incredible dark skies. It's also a great place to live, work and play. Durango was once a Wild West mining town and is now a popular tourist destination for skiing, mountain biking, river rafting, kayaking and the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Mesa Verde National Park is located just 36 miles to the west.

From the beginning our focus was to combine the installation of observatories along with the sale of equipment. We included in our showroom both a 6' x 8' roll-off roof observatory and a 6' Home Dome observatory to help customers understand how each style of observatory functions and which style would best suit their installation. We also placed a dual telescope with steel pier setup in the roll-off roof observatory so that customers could visualize how their current or future equipment would operate in an observatory.

In the spring of 2006 we had our first installations with roll-off roof observatories in California. Later in 2006 we had our first dome installation with a 6' Home Dome attached to an existing house. And each year we continue to expand our dome and roll-off roof observatory options and our expertise in observatory solutions.
